About
At Waitaki Property Guardians, we are dedicated to advocating for the protection of individual property rights while considering cultural and environmental values. Our primary goal is to represent the interests of local landowners and residents, ensuring their voices are integral in community discussions and decision-making processes. By uniting members, we create a powerful collective voice that advocates for the community's well-being and sustainable development.

History
During 2022, Waitaki District Council (‘Council’) launched its 10 year Draft Proposed District Plan (‘Draft Plan’) which every council is obliged to carry out under the Resource Management Act 1991. Our Council’s Draft Plan contained large sections of areas called ‘Overlays’ that determined what properties could be used for, restrictions on their use, conditions on resource consents, etc. Publication of the Draft Plan created concerns amongst some residents and ratepayers in both rural and urban areas of the Waitaki District particularly once the full consequences of Council’s Draft Plan were understood if this Draft Plan, as proposed, is approved and becomes the Waitaki District’s Operative Plan. Following formal correspondence with Council Officers, elected Councillors and federal politicians which failed to alleviate the concerns created by Council’s Draft Proposed District Plan, a number of residents formed a formal society called Waitaki Property Guardians Incorporated.
From Draft to Proposed Plan
On the 17th of December 2024 Waitaki District Council decided by majority vote to 'Notify' the Draft Plan which made it become the Proposed Plan. The Proposed Plan can be viewed and downloaded from Council's website: https://waitaki.isoplan.co.nz/review.
Ratepayers and Landowners within the Waitaki District can make 'submissions' to Council with their comments, objections, approvals, etc. until the 9th of May 2025.
Our Society will make (general) submissions to the Proposed Plan and encourages all Ratepayers and Landowners to also make their individual submissions to it.

Our Society has conducted a number of public meetings throughout the Waitaki District to make residents and ratepayers alike aware of the Proposed Plan, what its consequences could be for private properties and to offer assistance. To date (03/04/2025) our Society supports well over 200 members.
